This is my best Eagle Carving to date! I have done many different styles of eagles but this was especially unique since it is taking of with a Fish rather than simply grasping a fish in its talons. I carved this piece out of the end of a 47″ Alaska spruce log. A beautiful piece of wood. Loads of detail pop out of this piece as the feathers ar curved in such a way that has never been carved befor with a chainsaw!

I had this Idea for an octopus carving while I was driving the Alcan and then when I arrived I had the image in my head. The hardest part about this piece was carving the suction cups on the octopus! Worked on this piece for a whole two weeks! Its my Favorite wood carving! I also have this filmed on youtube! check it out:

Many things can inspire an artist to make a particular item. This horse bench came to me while I was on my couch watching “Hidalgo.”

Sometimes me and my dad get together on some projects. They are usually furniture pieces like coffee tables, chairs or benches (which this particular item is).

He builds log homes and is as equally creative with wood as I am, except he uses his “vision” to make custom homes instead of animal carvings.

We had not made a bench since the one we built a bear one for Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood over a year ago so we decided to make one.

One reason why we do not make a lot of them is the time and effort it takes to complete them. Its a lot of work! Unlike a typical wood carvings that I can make in several hours wooden benches can take several days to finish.

Most of the animal benches we had made in the past were bear or moose related so it was nice to change change it up and do a horse bench this time. I have mostly done wild animals in the past but lately I have been doing more domesticated stuff lately. Is the wild side leaving me?

Bear bears used to be my #1 seller. Now, after the Oregon Ducks made the 2011 BCS National Championship Game I cannot sell a bear here to save my life.

Everyone wants ducks!

So, in response to the demand, cute little ducks is what they will get.

Here is my new Oregon Duck carving. As soon as I made it someone came within a couple hours and bought it.

These miniature sculptures are a perfect fit for any Oregon Duck fan. They can go on your front porch, patio or indoors. Like the bear bears I can also make them with a beer bottle opener on the tail. If you want to order one, you know where to find me….

Me and another fellow carver Terry Klein were talking one day and he mentioned to me that he got a call from the store manager at one of the local Home Depots. Apparently, he was interested in us doing some carving in front of the store to draw attention to it. We talked about it and decided on a three day event that would take place in Oregon City at one of the stores there. We formulated a show where we could sell small sculptures and carve for the three day event. Home Depot was a real sport about everything; they delivered the logs for us and set up an area to carve right in front of the store . Not only was it great advertising but I sold out of half my carvings I made. The show each day lasted from 9AM to 5PM with a one hour quick carve where I would sculpt in front of people bears, eagles, moose, etc. Overall, I have a really fun time and thought the show was a success.

Here is a 3 foot tall welcome beer I recently did for a customer in the Seattle area. I was carving a medium bear beer last week and this guy came by asking me to do a carving for a new house he just bought. He was having a house warming and wanted something at the entrance to welcome guests. I told him about the Welcome Bears I do and he liked it. Here it is. I decided in bear to use a new fur cutting process with a Makita electric chainsaw because my results were a little bit course with the normal saw I normally use. The results from this particular saw, I found, was more pleasing to the eye. The result: my Welcome Bear has been transformed into the Waving Welcome Bear.

Bears was the first thing I started carving when I quit my construction job and starting making chainsaw sculptures in front of my dad’s showroom on the Seward Hwy, south of Anchorage.

How did it get started?

Me and my brother decided to have a beer next to the campfire and I popped the cap off my beer on the ear of one of my carved bears. It was then that my brother said “you should carve a bear that actually opens a beer bottle.”

We both kind of chuckled about it at first but after thinking about it for a moment my brother did a double take, then said “I’m sure you could find the right bottle opener that would fit on the paw of one of your bears.”

I looked around for a month until I found the perfect silver dollar sized metal piece that would attach to the bear. A week later I had my first two prototypes sitting out in front of the shop. They both sold in the first hour!

One of the beer bears was brought back because it did not properly open the bottle, to our surprise. So it was back to the drawing board again…

I then figured out it was the angle in which the metal piece was fixed to the carving. I then changed it to an exactly 25 degree angle to ensure no bottle interference. No more slivers for the customer!

During the past several years I have gotten away from making beer bears in favor of doing bigger pieces but this year, due to popular demand, I have decided to start emphasizing again what got me started in the beginning.
