Moose Carvings Everybody Loves Them

If you go to my property that’s what you are going to see half my inventory is.  Moose sculptures.  Everyone loves custom moose wood carvings.  Everyone wants the moose holding up a  ”welcome sign.”

I say “What are you looking for in a wood sculpture?”  And half of them say they want……a moose.  Great!  So I carve them a moose.

I never would have thought so many would love my goofy little moose carvings.  but it seems that thats where about half the orders come from now!

Wooden Carved Eagles, How

Wooden Carved Eagles, How

It all started from a fishing trip.  It was March in Homer, AK.  You can’t help but notice all the eagles on the shoreline in March. They flock like the geese in the Mississippi River Basin.  I saw eagles in every expresion immaginable.  I observed one eagle grab a fish and take it to shore.  As I was eatting breakfast at a local restaurant and sipping on a hot cup of  captain’s coffee I was startled by the famous cackle of a another bald eagle as  I was looking with many others at two eagles fighting over herreing(small fish) in mid flight.  It was another awe inspiring display of God’s creation.

So I decided to carve the sculpture you see above.  Purely one chainsaw purely one piece of spruce carved in one weekend.  This is simply my favorate piece.  One of my friends keeps asking about this one but to be honest I just can’t let it go.  I’ve had it for a year now.  This is one wood carving I think I may keep for myself.

Old Growth Timber Lands in Whittier

Old Growth Timber Lands in Whittier

A while back I got a call from the mayor of Whittier, Ak, this little but popular tourist town in SE Alaska.  A 500 year olf tree had landed on the beach and he wanted me to turn it into something for the city.  I could keep what I didn’t use.

Hum????  Oh yeah, and all I would be paid is the extra wood I didn’t use, and a lot of exposure.  Hum????

So I thought it over and said yes.  Why not, I thought, its not everyday you get to carve a sculpture from a 500+ year old log.

So I spent days working on this carving.  I sanded it, painted it, and came up with the picture you see on this post.  It turned out to be 9 foot tall and they placed it near the Small Boat Harbor.

Oh yeah, they gave me this small bronze plaque thanking me for my efforts.  I hung it up in my office.  Makes me feel nice every morning.

Went from Wood Carvings to Bear Benches Alyeska Resort

This was a sale I made to Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood, AK.  They came out really well.  Took me hours to sand the logs to get the log just the way I wanted it, nice and smooth.I made two of them and they put my other bear benches up at another chair lift.  Since I did these I’ve been geting several calls a month from people wanting these exact same bear benches.

Jordan Anderson a Life in Wood Carving

Jordan Anderson a Life in Wood Carving

I grew up in small town in Minnesota located on Lake Pokegama where I quickly learned to appreciate the wonders of nature by fishing, hunting, and camping in the Northland.

While at home after the hunting and fishing season I would reflect my experiences a field by sketching wildlife such as deer, bears, eagles, fish, wolfs, and others.  At age 11 I went on my first trip to Alaska with my family and friends.  This was a special trip because I always wanted to see Alaskan wildlife up close.

On my first halibut fishing trip I observed a pod of Orca Whales about 15 of them swimming alongside the boat, and a few breaching humpbacks.  I had never seen anything as amazing.  I gained a new appreciation for God’s creation that day.  I then begin to put my imagination for whales on a sketchpad.  Though my sketching was enjoyable I lost my enthusiasm for artwork at age 16.

I still sketched on occasion but only once a year until our family had moved to Alaska later on in life.  I worked most of my childhood building custom log homes with my father.  Even though I did not share the enthusiasm for building logs homes that my father had, I still had learned the art of handling a chainsaw.

Later I met a guy who carved bears with a chainsaw.  I thought to myself at the time, “I know how to use a chainsaw, why not try to carve Alaska wildlife?”

A few wood chips later I had my first wood carving.  It was an Orca Whale wood carving 14 foot long and 3 ft thick.  Its still my largest wood carving to date.  I carved a few more wood sculptures, then I had a month to display my work at a popular coffee shop in Anchorage.

A couple from Wasilla, Ak was interested in my work and wanted me to carve a couple of bear carving for them.  These were my first custom sculpture orders.  I then started my custom sculpture and chainsaw carving business called Jordan’s Custom Sculptures.

In the past couple years I have carved many unique pieces for people to fit their needs.  I have done everything from bears holding custom signs, elaborate benches, to interior wall carvings.  From exterior landmark sculptures to community art projects.  Dog portraits, sealife carvings, and sports mascots, I have just about done it all.

I never imagined all of that but now “your immagination can become a beautiful reality,” at Jordan’s Custom Sculptures.  www.jordanscustom.com
