Wooden Bear Carving Mailbox

Wooden Bear Carving Mailbox

My longtime friend Ron came to me several weeks ago with an interesting request for a wood carving.  He wanted me to make a mailbox for him in the shape of a bear.

A wooden bear for a mail box, eh?  Could be interesting.

So I worked on the bear for a whole week.  I sculpted it just the way I wanted to then the mail box took a little tweaking. It ended up turning out nice for the first “mailbox bear!”

We then dug a hole in his front yard, then filled with concrete , and put the bear sculpture on it .  It came out real cool.

Orca Whale Sculpture made out of Alaska spruce wood

Orca Whale Sculpture made out of Alaska spruce wood

I made this wood sculpture for man in Anchor Point.  He’s a big whale lover and when he drove by all the sea life wood sculptures at my place.

He wanted a large whale so I proposed an Orca wood sculpture.  He liked the idea and I spent three days making the carving. It was 7 ft tall.

He really loved it.  I am curious to know where he put it.  I don’t know if he put the Orca carving in her front yard, house, or back deck.

I do know he told all friends about it and one of them ordered a smaller whale from me.

I love carving whales.  They are my favorate for some reason.  It was one of the first  Orca wood sculptures I carved.

Wood Bear Carvings

Wood Bear Carvings

This is one of my favorite wood carvings to make.  Its a climbing bear.  I made this bear carving for a guy that lives in Indian down the street from us.  He loved it.

Wild berry Products Welcome Bear
Peter is the guy who owns the Wild berry Products here in Anchorage.  Its a popular tourist destination in the city.  He has this huge chocolate fountain at his store  a big hit in the summer. Really fun guy to be around.  Anyway, I made him this bear to put in front of his parking lot.  He loved it.  He’s a big bear fan.  Peter has wooden bear carvings all over the front of his store.  This one can be seen in front of the parking lot scratching its back on a post. We even put an information sign right by it.

Beer Bears Put Me Over the Top

Jan 14th, 2009 by Jordan
Beer Bears Put Me Over the Top

I got to give my brother Jason a lot of credit. He came up with the idea years ago. We were just playing around. It was a simple idea. Take a small wood carving of a bear. Then add a bottle opener to it.
Seemed good enough. So the Spring of 2007 I tried it. It was really only originally made as a joke. A party item for me and some friends. First I made some for me and some of my friends. They loved it. One of my friends bought two from me that day for $50.00 a piece. I thought to myself, maybe I should make more…..

So I did. And guess what? People loved them. Before all my other wood carvings there was beer bears. I was selling at least three of these everyday for that whole spring and summer. It gave me the push to get going. A lot of people thought I was going to starve when I started this. Even a guy a knew for 10 years was thinking that. He told me that several weeks ago. I was laughing. I thought I was going to fail to. This was just a little experiment. I thought I was going to try this, have fun, make a little money, and then go back to working for my dad building log homes. But the beer bears sold off like crazy.

It was only after the beer bears I got into other things like benches, moose, eagles, orcas, or any other wood carving. I think its real funny the way life works out sometime. As I’m writing this I’m cracking open a cold New Castle on a beer bear right now.
